Department of International Relations

Department of International Relations was established by the decision of the Scientific Council of Belarusian State University at the Department of History on September 1, 1992 due to the necessity of training specialists for foreign policy apparatus for the Belarusian state.

In connection with the formation on October 1, 1995 the Department of International Relations was transferred to a separate Faculty, where it operates to the present. Since the establishment of the department, its head is Alexander Sharapo, Doctor of Science (History), Professor.

Currently, the Department of International Relations employs seven doctors and twelve candidates of sciences. Teaching personnel of the Department has prepared several dozens of course books and manuals for various subjects, published monographs and collections of scientific papers, as well as hundreds of articles and other scientific materials.

The Department is in charge for graduating students majoring in 1-23 01 01 "International Relations". First 14 people graduated in June 1995. Students with majors in "Foreign Policy and Diplomacy" and "International Organizations" are trained here, as well as students with major in "Languages and Country Studies" ("Foreign Policy of Countries of the Middle East" and "Foreign Policy of the Far East").

The Department also provides individual training courses for the students specialized in international law, international economics, management in tourism, crosscultural studies, customs affairs. Lecturers of the Department are working at other faculties of Belarusian State University.

For the last 5 years the Department has prepared and issued more than 200 scientific publications, including 7 monographs and more than 100 articles in Belarusian and foreign academic reviews. The Department regularly prepares the materials for the publications in collections of scientific works and reports, encyclopedic and reference editions. Editorial board of "Journal of International Law and International Relations" includes professors Anatoly Rozanov, Victor Shadurski, Alexander Sharapo. The Head of the Department Professor Sharapo is as well a member of the editorial board of "Vesnik BDU".

The Department regularly participates in various scientific and research-to-practice conferences in Belarus and abroad. The Department of International Relations is involved in wide academic network within the University. The Department has scientific ties with the Academy of Management of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Institutes of History and Economy of the National Academy of Science, the Republican Institute of Higher Education, the Institute of National Security, Belarusian State Pedagogical University of Tank, Brest State University of Pushkin etc.

Research-to-practice developments of the Department are in demand in Administration of the President of the Republic of Belarus, the Security Council, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Information, other state institutions. Moreover, the Department is a member of the Association of Schools of Central and Eastern Europe on the Research in Sphere of International Relations. The Department has arranged relations with University of People's Friendship (Russia), Wroclaw University (Poland), Vienna Diplomatic Academy (Austria), Centre for Security and Conflicts Research of Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland). The Department works in close academic cooperation with Diplomatic Academy and MGIMO (the Russian Federation) and Institute of Economic and Political Research of Russian Academy of Science. In 2008 Professor Snapkouski, a member of the academic staff of the Department, was awarded Picheta's Prize of BSU for significant achievements in science. The Head of the Department, Professor Sharapo, is a Honorary Figure of Belarusian Higher Education.
